2027 XVI SALSA Biennial Conference
University of Campinas – Unicamp
July 28 to August 01, 2027
The XVI SALSA Biennial Conference 2027 will take place at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), located in the city of Campinas, São Paulo state (Brazil), from 28 July to 1 August 2027. In addition to bringing together the international SALSA community, the event organization is working to promote a highly plural gathering, marked by the broad participation of researchers, educators, artists, members of Indigenous peoples and traditional communities, and representatives of diverse social movements.
The theme of the Conference will be Confluent Knowledges: Diversities and Epistemic Justice. Drawing on the idea of “confluence” by the quilombola Antônio Bispo, this conference is inspired by a movement of sharing lives and knowledges that proliferates differences and rejects unity. The proposal is guided by the possibility of confluence among knowledges – those woven within the academic environment and those emerging from the lived experiences of Indigenous peoples and other traditional peoples and communities – so as to embrace the vast social, cultural, and epistemic diversity pulsing in lowland South America. This gathering is motivated by the desire to critically recognize the pathways of dialogue between the university and the ways of thinking, feeling, and acting politically of these peoples. Along this path, land struggles, reflections on the socio-environmental impacts of capitalist ventures in traditional territories, and the shared construction of knowledge by different knowledge regimes intertwine.
