Sistema Digital de Oralidades Eetane de la UNAL

The Digital System of Oralities Eetane is a platform that seeks to create a global network of digital archives of indigenous languages. Its main objective is to strengthen and support local initiatives for the cultural and linguistic revitalization of Amerindian peoples.

The name Eetane, which means “something bright that rises, expands, and attracts people,” was given by an elder from the Magütá people. This name symbolizes the purpose of the platform: to elevate and expand knowledge about native languages, and to attract communities and the world at large to their preservation.

Eetane is integrated as a node in a broader digital ecosystem of language archives. It builds on the previous work of the Digital Archive of Indigenous Languages of the Amazon (ARDILIA) and the Laboratory of Languages and Symmetrical Dialogue of the Amazonia Campus of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

The initiative is aligned with international and national legal frameworks and policies, such as the UNESCO Declaration on the Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032) and the Ten-Year Plan for Native Languages in Colombia. By assigning public universities a role in the protection of native languages, Eetane complies with the provisions of Colombia’s Law 1381 of 2010, reaffirming its commitment to the protection and preservation of the region’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
