SALSA 2025 Transportation

How to get around: Transportation

SALSA 2025 Biennial Conference

University of Helsinki

Public transport in Helsinki is the preferred and sustainable mode of transport in Helsinki. It is efficient, reliable and reasonably priced. The distances in Helsinki are not long, so we highly recommend public transportation, among biking and walking.

Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) is the capital city area’s public transport operator. It covers buses, trams, an underground metro service, commuter trains, and even city bikes and ferries. The capital area is divided into four zones: A, B, C and D. AB covers the whole extended city center, and most likely your hotel is in AB zone.

Route information and best connections can be found with HSL’s online journey planner (reittiopas) or Google Maps.

You can buy one-route tickets (2,95 €/ ABC), 1–13 day tickets, or series-tickets (10-20 travels). Each ticket is valid for 110 min.

You can use HSL app (free) to buy your tickets on your mobile, or HSL service point, or ticket machines (next to stops, train stations, metro stations and bus terminals).

From the airport to the city centre

By train

We recommend public transportation and making the event sustainable. Between the city center and the airport, take commuter train I or P. This is a convenient way of travelling, and the journey takes approximately 30 minutes.

At Helsinki Airport, walk directly to the train station within the terminal (no need to go outside). To the city center, you will need an ABC ticket (4,10€). Single tickets and day tickets can be purchased using the HSLmobile app or from HSL ticket machines from the train station. Tickets cannot be purchased onboard commuter trains.

By taxi

The journey between Helsinki Airport and the city center by taxi takes approximately 20 minutes and costs around €40-45.

Walking. The venue is located at the Central Campus of the University of Helsinki, at walking distance from main attractions and central hotels (5 minutes walking distance from the main railway station).

City bikes are available in many places.

Tram is the easiest public transportation within the city center of Helsinki. Eleven different tram routes cover most of the city center. To access university, use trams no. 6, 9, 3 (Exit at Kaisaniemenkatu) or no. 4, 2, 5, 7 (Exit at Aleksanterinkatu).

Metro. You may like to experience red Helsinki metros. Exit at “University of Helsinki”.
