Edna Carolina Mayorga Sánchez, postgraduate student from the PPGAS in Anthropology of the Museu Nacional, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro was awarded US$2,000 for her research:
Representations of mental health from an Indigenous Amazonian perspective of the Ticuna ethnic group, between Colombia and Brazil
The objective of the research is to identify the mental health representations of the Indigenous Ticuna people of the Amazon tri-border region between Peru, Brazil and Colombia by collecting their perceptions in relation to this concept and asking how they experience it from their worldview and their notions of personhood. This is framed in a critical reflection on the concept, which has been imposed in public policies and interventions from a biomedical perspective. The importance of this project lies in rethinking these concepts from the Indigenous perspective while also proposing the inclusion of a cosmological vision from the territory in heath programs.
