Ronaldo de Queiroz Lima  winner or the Norm and Sibby Whitten Research Fund 2019

Ronaldo de Queiroz Lima, graduate student of the Universidade Federal da Bahia and Researcher at the Universidade Federal de Ceará, was one of the winners of a 2019 Norm and Sibby Whitten Research Fund Award of US$1,000 for his research on how Anacé ethnicity allows the production of kinship in two distinct territorial situations in Northeast Brazil.

Anacé people: kinship, creation of places and Indigenous leadership

This project looks at the elaboration of Anacé ethnicity based on kinship and the creation of places as a production of Indigenous conditions linking the human and the nonhuman. Anacé’s history is studied in two distinct territorial situations. The land boundaries are defined by the state, which interacts with Indigenous chiefs and is mediated by an anthropologist. The leader is legitimized by kinship networks and sometimes by the creation of places. Indigenous conditions of existence involve power in a stateless state and with the state, as an asymmetrical relationship. Indigenous leadership, kinship, and placemaking are key words of this research.
