Juliet S. Erazo is a Cultural Anthropologist in Florida International University’s Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies. She has been conducting research with Amazonian Kichwa people in Napo Province, Ecuador, since 1994. Her research examines how different ideas of improvement and empowerment from the Global North do and do not shape Indigenous lives. Most recently, she has been examining how changes to Ecuador’s Election Law have led to a rapid growth in the number of Kichwa women running for, and sometimes winning, elected offices, and the varied implications of that historic shift.  She has previous experience serving as Treasurer for a school Parent Teacher Association with a US $100,000 annual budget.
